Adult obesity rates rose in 31 states last year, according to the fourth annual F as in Fat: How Obesity Policies are Failing in America, 2007 report from the Trust for America's Health. The group found 22 states experienced an increase in obesity for the second year in a row, and no states saw a decrease. Mississippi ranked as the state with the greatest percentage of obese adults and the first state to see more than 30 percent of its population fall into this category. Colorado had the smallest percentage of obese adults, although its percent rose to 17.6 percent from 16.9 percent the previous year. The District of Columbia (22.8 percent) is home to the greatest percentage of obese children while Utah (8.5 percent) had the lowest percentage of obese children. Rates of adult obesity now exceed 25 percent in 19 states, an increase from 14 states last year and 9 in 2005. In 1991, none of the states exceeded 20 percent.
