The public thinks the pharmaceutical industry, like the oil and tobacco industries, is not worthy of trust and should be more regulated.

The Burrill Report

The American public trusts the pharmaceutical industry more than it trusts the oil and tobacco industry, but not by much. Just 11 percent of more than 2,500 adults surveyed online by Harris Interactive considered the pharmaceutical industry generally honest and trustworthy. That’s down from 13 percent five years ago. The news was worse for managed care companies, which won a 5 percent response from the Harris Poll participants, but that was actually up a point from five years ago. Tobacco and oil companies ranked lowest with 3 percent each. A total of 53 percent of people think the pharmaceutical industry should be more regulated. While that is better than the 57 percent who felt that way five years ago, it is equal to the percent of people who feel the oil industry is in need of greater regulation - more than any other industry. They were followed by health insurance companies (52 percent) and managed care companies (48 percent). Below are the results of the survey.
