The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, which has invested in venture capital funds for more than 20 years, conducted an analysis of its own investments and concluded that it is the limited partner model that’s broken. We spoke to Diane Mulcahy, director of private equity for the Kauffman Foundation, about its report, why the foundation finds venture capital funds and their LPs interests are often misaligned, and what needs to be done to fix the problem.

Choppy Facebook IPO Does Little to Brighten Mood of Equity Markets
Any hope that Facebook’s much anticipated IPO would help turn around a rough month for equity markets was shattered when Facebook’s shares failed to pop and finished its first trading day up just .6 percent. Wall Street posted its worst week of the year and all three major indices suffered substantial losses. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 3.5 percent, the Nasdaq Composite Index finished lower by 5.3 percent, and the S&P 500 Index dipped 4.3 percent. The S&P 500’s losses dropped the index to below 1,300, seen as a key support level, for the first time since mid-January. The biotech sector was hit especially hard this week as the Burrill Biotech Select Index fell 4.2 percent.

Rosetta Genomics was the week’s biggest mover as it received news that Novitas plans to cover the company’s miRview mets2 assay for all Medicare beneficiaries. The MiRview mets2 assay identifies the primary tumor of origin in primary and metastatic cancer. Shares of Rosetta Genomics rose 126.5 percent for the week.

Savient Pharmaceuticals saw its shares fall the most this week after it announced further complications with the launch of its gout drug Kryslexxa. Shares of the company slipped 45 percent for the week.
