Health Network Kicks Into High Gear

Cisco expands its role with next-generation health network.

“The goal is to transform NLR into a translational healthcare ecosystem that can help advance our understanding of genomic medicine and bring the power of supercomputing to the point of care.”

New advanced networking gear from Cisco Systems will be added to an advanced health data exchange network funded by biotech billionaire Patrick Soon-Shiong, adding expanded telepresence capabilities to support better collaboration between the 280 universities and federal laboratories the network connects.

The networking gear will expand the infrastructure behind National LambdaRail (NLR), a non-profit fiber optic communications network linking leading research institutions throughout the United States.

Soon-Shiong, through his Chan Soon-Shiong Institute for Advanced Health, took over funding responsibility for project in July, committing $100 million to its future. The funding came with a new focus on health data and healthcare applications. The Institute is leveraging the network to connect medical research centers, genomic sequencing centers, and hospitals to create a national health information infrastructure.

With Cisco’s expanded involvement, the network will begin to include better support for the increasingly unwieldy amounts of data generated by large scientific research projects. Those capabilities will be integrated with the network’s existing support for immersive, ultra-high-definition video conferencing. The goal, say the partners, is to transform NLR into a “translational healthcare ecosystem” that can help advance our understanding of genomic medicine and bring the power of supercomputing to the point of care.
