Proposed new rules from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ West Coast administrator threaten to raise the bar on what molecular diagnostics companies will need to do to get paid for their tests. Among other things, the newly issued guidelines call for only paying for tests that companies have proved to be both valid and useful in the clinic. We spoke to Bruce Quinn, senior health policy analyst at the law firm Foley and Hoag, about the draft guidelines, how reimbursement for diagnostics is changing, and what’s at stake for the companies in this emerging area.
